Maclowe wedding collections sell for $ 676m on blockbuster sales

It took years, but Harry and Linda Macklowe finally had the answer to one of the questions that had been hung on their isolation divorce: How valuable was the artwork he collected for 50 years?

On Monday, 35 pieces of artwork by the former two, including the works of Alberto Giacometti, Mark Rothko and Cy Twombly, sold for $ 676m at Sotheby’s New York headquarters.

The sale exceeded Sotheby’s net worth of $ 400m, and contribution is among the largest ever-sold on the market.

There have been long-running controversies over a number of projects, confirming a New York judge’s order that the technique be sold after landmaker Harry and art collector Linda argued over statistics.

The paintings of Agnes Martin and Philip Guston sold twice as much as their average comparison, with a new record set by Martin and Jackson Pollock, Robert Irwin and Michael Heizer, according to Sotheby’s.

Martin’s minimalist “Unnamed # 44”, Consisting of exchanged groups of blue flour and ivory, valued at $ 17.7m, plus fines. “Pollock”No. 17, 1951“, from his Black Paintings series, he also set a record of $ 61m, including pay.

RothkoNumber 7“, which was created in 1951 and includes color blocks that are part of its well-known designs, priced at $ 82.5m, and fines, a huge overnight cost.

A mammoth 18-foot wide paint the Twombly red peonies completed and acquired in 2007 sold for $ 58.9m, plus a fine. And Nose, a bronze-nose sculpture completed by Giacometti in 1965, cost $ 78.4m.

Marilyn Monroe’s stunning artwork and Andy Warhol, one of the stars, made only a brief stint before the project was sold for $ 42m. But late at night, Barker reopened the order and the paint sold for $ 47.4m, plus a fine.

Prior to the payment, 35 lots were sold for $ 589.7m, a number that will be close to the amount shared by Maclowes.

Monday’s event was the first of two commercials to complete the final chapter of the long-running divorce war between the Maclowes. The same split – which was a big deal after Harry posted great pictures of himself and his new wife at one of his Park Avenue favors insulting his ex-wife – has already been completed.

But during the divorce, Linda refused the full sale of the art. Because she and her ex-husband disagreed on the cost of multiple services, the judge ordered the couple to cancel most of their donations. At one point, their appreciation for one job varied from about $ 30m.

“If you find the land to be very important, you can have three more rooms in one house. You will have a house across the street, you will have the same, “said Dan Rottenstreich, co-partner of Cohen Clair Lans Greifer Thorpe & Rottenstriech, the law firm that represented Harry in the divorce. , it ‘s difficult to find a match for it. “

A lot of technical sales are done in public, Rottenstreich added, which makes it harder for the court to sign off on the count.

The sale, which was delayed by the coronavirus epidemic, reached a technically advanced market roared back to life, especially at a higher level.

Last week Christie sold over $ 1.1bn worth of products as part of a two-year annual event in New York. Sotheby’s and Phillips estimate that they will earn less than $ 550m in the coming days, up from Monday’s results.

Linda Maclowe declined to comment. Harry Maclowe was not reached for comment.
