and the rest of the Boston Dynamics family can capture all the attention, but Hyundai has a distinct and solid robotic component. . This week, the car manufacturer revealed Mobile Eccentric Droid or MobED, a new mobile platform that takes even the most demanding and uneven terrain.
The company’s Robotic Lab claims to have developed MobED to overcome the limitations of existing internal and functional robots. Each wheel of the robot has its own independent power and steering wheel that allows it to rotate on its axis and move in any direction. It also has an eccentric drive system, hence the name, which allows it to adjust the height of each wheel. As you can see in the video, this means that it can provide a stable platform for something as fragile as glass.
MobED is able to expand its wheelbase up to 25 inches when it needs to be stabilized as much as possible. It can also connect about 17 inches when found in the most extreme places. In all, the tower is about 26 inches long, 23 inches wide, and 13 inches high. A 2 kWh battery allows the robot to run for about four hours at a single charge.
Outside of work as a service robot, Hyundai looks to MobED for support in the area as a film company where filmmakers can put their equipment on the platform. It can also be used for shipping and other items for stability. We will have the opportunity to see more of the Hyundai robot when it stops at CES 2022 next month. However, the company has not stated whether it intends to sell MobED.
