The chief executive of a secret Signal messaging app, which became very popular last year during a dispute over WhatsApp privacy policies, has resigned and has been temporarily replaced by WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton.
Mu a blog post On Monday, Moxie Marlinspike said he thought it was “a good time to take his place” as a senior after almost ten years in office, adding that “it is an important part of developing Signal success”.
Marlinspike will remain on the Signal board, he said. Acton, who re-launched WhatsApp in 2009, “volunteered” to take over the oversight role while the team continued to search for people, he added.
The signal gives you encryption which means that messages cannot be retrieved by outsiders. It has long been of great importance to human rights activists, journalists and those concerned with privacy.
Zake great interest grew In early 2021, especially when WhatsApp harassed users by changing its passwords to allow certain payments made to be shared with its parent company Meta, formerly known as Facebook. The program was also sponsored by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who wrote “Use Signal” throughout the season.
“Signal has grown and become more global in popularity than I thought,” Marlinspike said. “I’m amazed at how Signal can look infinitely, and I want to bring in someone strong and dedicated to benefit from it.”
However, the agency’s recent decision including impossible cryptocurrency, which is known as private money, in this program to be able to pay each other anonymously, has raised concerns that this could attract illegal activities and illumination.
Acton, who will be a long-term manager when Marlinspike quit the job next month, sold WhatsApp on Facebook in 2014 for $ 22bn. He left the company in 2018 following disputes with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg over user privacy and the company’s independence.
Since then he has been a vocal critic of social media, posting the hashtag #deletefacebook during the Cambridge Analytica riots.
Together with Marlinspike, Acton was a co-founder of the Signal Foundation, a non-profit organization that focuses on creating “secret intelligence” on communications, and is the parent organization of the Signal messenger program.
