Haitian President Jovenel Moise was shot dead in his home last night, according to Prime Minister Claude Joseph.
“At around 1am, a group of unidentified individuals, some of whom speak Spanish, have attacked the President and damaged the head of state,” said Martine Moise. .
Joseph appealed for calm, saying police and soldiers were monitoring security and condemning what he called “evil, inhuman and degrading”.
Moise, 53, has ruled the Caribbean country of 11m since 2017 but has faced numerous street protests over false accusations and a heated debate with critics over his term as President.
Haiti, the poorest country in the United States, has experienced political and economic upheaval in recent years, as well as natural disasters.
