Grindr continues to face challenges in China. Bloomberg reports the gay dating program has it missing from the Apple App Store in the country, researchers in Qima speculate that the app was removed on January 27. There were no details of the departure, but it came just days after China’s Cyberspace launched a campaign to remove illegal content, pornography and rumors. Winter Olympics.
We asked Apple and Grindr to comment. The departure of the app came after weeks of trouble with Grindr’s work, such as difficulties in adding preferences or sending messages.
Homosexuality is not a crime in China. Even so, the country sometimes bans homosexuals and other LGBT people. If the authorities had ordered the removal of Grindr, it would probably have been part of a larger campaign to force the people to unite.
I must say, Grindr already had a strong relationship with the Chinese government. The company was formerly Chinese forced to sell due to US sanctions, and Chinese opponents like Blued remain on the App Store even though Grindr is missing. If these programs continue, their presence could prompt China to adopt Grindr instead of directly targeting all sexually explicit programs.
Whatever the reason, the dismissal illustrates the problem for Apple and foreign software developers who want to work in China. Although they may point out the importance of rights and privacy in their countries, Chinese law often forces them to do so download software or excluding features if they want to continue participating in the world’s largest mobile devices market. In short, companies like Apple have to accept compromises if they want to remain Chinese.
