EU international travel plans were launched on Thursday, allowing European citizens to resume travel without isolation in order to help boost summer tourism.
The EU’s “green digital certificate” may allow Europeans with evidence of a vaccine, a Covid-19 misdiagnosis test, or proof of HIV status, to travel to other member states. The program-based certificate provides travelers with QR codes that allow them to avoid being confined to other member countries.
The letter was approved by EU governments and MEPs in May and was launched after pressure from the southern economy on tourism and the high demand for summer tourists.
The system, now being implemented in all 27 countries, was already being tested by many countries before it was implemented. More than 200m has now been downloaded, according to the European Commission.
Brussels has been pressured to create a mechanism for communication so that member states do not set their own rules. The airline and the travel industry also need the development of a pilot’s technology to better manage the vaccinated and non-vaccinated people.
“The European Digital Certificate is a symbol of an open and secure Europe that carefully opens up to put the security of our citizens first,” said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Citizens outside the EU can join if they receive the full vaccine and jab recognized by the European Medicines Agency. Member countries may also choose to allow travelers who have received other jabs that have been automatically approved by the World Health Organization.
“Right now it takes a lot of documentation to get to Greece,” said Isidora Chandeli, a Verina hotel manager on Sifnos Island. “A European passport will make the process easier.”
