New infections in the midst of the Omicron coronavirus epidemic in South Africa are showing “early signs” of decline because hospital admissions remain low in the past, the health minister said.
South Africa filed more than 24,000 new cases on Thursday, about one-third of those diagnosed with the virus.
But in recent days new cases and testing tests seem to have changed dramatically in Gauteng, the financial center where the first Omicron cases in South Africa were observed.
Despite high crime rates in some provinces, Gauteng is expected to have risen sharply by 35 percent, Joe Phaahla, the health minister, said on Friday.
Gauteng now accounts for about a quarter of new daily cases in South Africa, down from about a quarter of Omicron’s first quarter, added.
Since the end of November, when Omicron was first identified in the region by scientists in South Africa and Botswana, the fourth hurricane in South Africa has risen sharply but with fewer hospital admissions now compared to the same period in the past.
South African scientists are cautioning against this “decline” due to the high number of people who have been infected with the virus in the past and a vaccination program that has affected many older people. Although about 4 out of 10 adults have been vaccinated twice, most people over the age of 60 received the same dose.
In the second week of the fourth wave, hospitals were moving about 350 per day compared to about 20,000 confirmed new daily cases, compared with those hospitalized about 900 and 4,500 new daily cases in the second week of the third wave, Phaahla said. South Africa’s third eagle was the Delta national anthem.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was found to be HIV positive over the weekend with few symptoms, “has a positive and relaxed spirit in his recovery,” the government said Friday.
The government has so far maintained restrictions, such as arriving home at night, at a much lower rate through Omicron. The health ministry said on Friday that the methods are not changing at this time but are being monitored more frequently.
As the year draws to a close and the season of summer festivities begins, the vaccination program in South Africa is not meeting its demands, and approximately 100,000 to 130,000 are given in one day compared to the target of 250,000.
“The numbers are very low,” Phaahla said.
The program has brought with it difficulties in distributing to poorer areas, as well as false news and concerns about its consequences.
South Africa is expected to launch a massive production of BioNTech / Pfizer, one of the country’s two largest used devices, by the end of the year. The decision to steer clear of a single-level Johnson & Johnson shot is expected soon.
