Apple Daily, a pro-democracy democracy in Hong Kong founded by reporters by Jimmy Lai, will close on Saturday after its economy has cooled off in what critics say is a threat to free newspapers in the city.
Next Digital, the newspaper’s parent company, says final copy will be published on Saturday and its website will not be available from midnight.
Apple Daily was known for its determination to crack down on government criticism.
Hong Kong officials have enacted anti-violence and anti-political laws in China following anti-democratic protests that hit the city in 2019. These include the enactment of international security laws that have significantly reduced protests.
Apple Daily editor Li Ping was arrested on Wednesday. Li was arrested a few days after the authorities did so attacked Apple Daily offices and held five supervisors, including Ryan Law, his chief editor. This was the first time that a national security law had been enacted against the media.
Lai has already been arrested on special charges.
