Spotify said it would add “technical” warnings to podcasts discussing Covid-19, in which the advertising campaign responded to its famous podcaster Joe Rogan.
The company, however, did not remove the December 31 episode of Rogan’s podcast that angered hundreds of doctors and scientists, as well as musicians. Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, who released their music from Spotify in protest.
Rogan’s podcast, as he did with a medical expert who suspects the mRNA coronavirus vaccine, did not meet Spotify’s violation limits, according to a company spokesman.
“Based on the comments made in the last few weeks, it has become clear to me that we have a responsibility to do more to get better and to get valid information from the medical and scientific experts who are guiding us in an unprecedented way,” said Daniel. Ek wrote in a blog post on Sunday.
Spotify is fixing the scandal after Young and Mitchell removed their music from the show in protest of Rogan’s “lies”. The move sparked an online controversy, with some social media accounts promising #DeleteSpotify.
Ek outlined what Spotify would do to address concerns that the platform was spreading false information about coronavirus. He said Spotify would add “technology” to any podcast that talks about Covid-19. The technology will lead the audience to a new coronavirus hub that will provide facts and information, as well as links to “reliable sources”.
Spotify republished its internal rules on the content of its page.
In addition to laws against hate speech or harassment, the law states that violations may include “material that promotes false or fraudulent medical information that could harm without the internet or threaten public health”.
Spotify in 2020 paid more than $ 100m to bring a Rogan podcast to work for him because he only wanted to promote himself rather than music. Rogan has previously invited guests to his podcast with controversial views on coronavirus and politics.
His December guest, Robert Malone, who had previously researched mRNA technology and now opposes the Covid-19 vaccine, has been banned from Twitter and YouTube for violating their false claims. In his podcast, Rogan said he was “disappointed” that Malone was “silent”.
A group of doctors and scientists earlier this month called on Spotify “false information” on its platform, arguing that the false allegations made on Rogan’s podcasts were “extremely dangerous”.
