A team of three sponsors – Mastercard, Ambev and Diageo – have dropped their products in the Copa America tournament in Brazil, which is set to kick off on Sunday despite tensions between the Covid-19 in the country.
The largest country in Latin America volunteered to perform Regional competitions at the end of last month after the previous host organizations Argentina and Colombia ended. Buenos Aires cited a file of the prevalence of coronavirus cases, while Bogotá criticized the domestic protests.
Brazil’s idea of an intervention, backed by Justice President Jair Bolsonaro, has been criticized by many medical professionals and politicians, who say they are at risk of spreading the virus as the epidemic continues.
Mastercard said after careful consideration he decided to remove his name from the Copa America this year, although it would still support the tournament, which was already suspended in 2020.
The British alcoholic beverage group Diageo, comprising Smirnoff, Guinness and Johnnie Walker, has called off all commercial activities “based on the situation in Brazil and in the case of the Covid-19 epidemic”.

Brazilian brewer Ambev, who is the world’s largest producer of roundabout AB InBev, said “his products are not available in the Copa America”.
Uncertain votes come as Brazil faces a third Covid-19 epidemic as the weather cools.

But the former army chief was reassured when the Brazilian trade group Havan, Luciano Hang’s running mate, announced his support for the race.
“I hope it will be a competition that will delight all Brazilians,” he said.
This week the Brazilian Supreme Court has refused to try to ban the country from making the Copa America.
The Brazil Soccer Confederation and the South American Soccer Confederation did not respond to a request for comment.
