The bridge collapsed in Pittsburgh on Friday just hours before US President Joe Biden left the city to discuss the country’s infrastructure needs and to commend the introduction of a law to help improve roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

Mr Biden drove crew members to the bridge shortly after arriving in Pittsburgh and stayed for 15 minutes, reviewing the damage done by government officials, government officials and Congress.

“We ‘re just about to do some construction, it’s amazing,” Biden told some officials. He also spoke to early responders who described hearing loud noises during the fall.

“There are more bridges in Pittsburgh than any other city in the world,” the US President said. “And we will fix everything. Not a joke. ”

Biden’s visit to western Pennsylvania comes three months after he signed $ 1.2tn building codewhich received a double standard for what the president called “a lot of money for roads and bridges over the last 70 years”.

The bridge, which collapsed early Friday morning, was described by local authorities as the main channel for the city, and state and state officials have been described as “poor” for years.

The 50-year-old Forbes Avenue bridge slowly broke down at 7am just before 7am on a cold and snowy day, waiting for me to stop. Photos from the scene showed four vehicles in the river below the bridge.

Darryl Jones, chief of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire, said two occupants of the bus – which had been shaken to the brink of collapse – and its driver were evacuated by rescue workers who disrupted about 100 to 150 feet in the river. Officials say all 10 people were injured, including respondents who descended from the iceberg.

UPMC, Pittsburgh’s health council, said four officials affected by the collapse of the bridge were receiving treatment at two of its hospitals. All were in good condition, Andrea Kunicky, a UPMC spokeswoman, said in an email.

Jones said a “massive drop of gas” had occurred, and gas was cut in families across the East End in Pittsburgh. Because of the fall “I’m being investigated”, Jones said.

Local and state officials rushed to the scene. Rich Fitzgerald, the governor of Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, said the White House and Tom Wolf, the Democratic Republic of Pennsylvania governor, called for a change. Pennsylvania was a key country in the 2020 presidential election, and the congressional hearings are attracting a lot of people at times.

“Unfortunately for now, the injury is not a threat,” Fitzgerald told a news conference. But, he added, “more work needs to be done”.

Adam Brandolph, a spokesman for the Allegheny County Port Authority, said the bridge collapsed in two different locations. The 22-ton bus may have to be cut in half to be cleared, he said.

Ed Gainey, mayor of Pittsburgh, a Democrat, stressed that funding for road construction and bridges was “difficult”.

He said: “Today is a very important day. “By the end of the day, we could have been seriously injured. . . It is important that we get the money. ”

The White House said in a statement that the Biden group had contacted officials who were “continuing to gather information about the cause of the collapse”.

Transport costs generate more than half of the nearly $ 550bn in new spending that the new law provides. The money will be used for five years to repair roads, bridges and tunnels as well as airports, airports and other repairs.
