The drills came a few days after Moscow claimed to have shot down British ships in the Black Sea.

The Russian military has set up a navigation system in the Mediterranean Sea with fighter jets capable of carrying fake arrows, a powerful demonstration amidst the aftermath of the British invasion of the Black Sea.

Moscow said one of its submarines was fired with a warning and a fighter jet dropped on a British roadblock destroying a Defender Wednesday to evacuate an area near the Crimea that Russia says is its waters. Britain denied the allegations, saying the ship had not been shot down and that it was traveling in Ukrainian waters.

Russian drills that began Friday in the Eastern Mediterranean are coming as British airstrip is in the region.

Earlier this week, British and US F-35 fighters from HMS Queen Elizabeth went to fight the ISIL (ISIS) group.

Russia has been actively operating in Syria since September 2015, allowing the government of President Bashar al-Assad to regain control of many territories in the aftermath of the civil war.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said two MiG-31 aircraft carrying Kinzhal missiles had arrived at the Russian airport in Syria to do so. The Hemeimeem airport, in the Latakia coastal region, is the most operated airport in Moscow.

This is the first time that Kinzhal fighter jets have been sent across Russia.

Soldiers say Kinzhal flies 10 times faster than the speed of the voice and lasts up to 2,000km (about 1,250 miles).

The Ministry of Defense said missions in the eastern Mediterranean affected several warships, two submarines and long Tu-22M3 aircraft as well as other warplanes.

Nuclear-powered Tu-22M3s were first shipped to Syria last month indicating the number of Russian troops in the Mediterranean.

The Russian military has changed the runway to Hemeimeem to deal with the bombings and has built a second to expand operations there.

Russia has also expanded and transformed the Syrian waters of Tartus, the only land they have outside the former Soviet Union.

The Russian military has increased the number and extent of its attempts at tensions between them and the West, which is about to end after the Cold War following Moscow’s 2014 coup on the Crimean Peninsula of Ukraine.

As part of President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to strengthen the Russian military, the navy in recent years has revived the Soviet Union’s policy of reversing its warships in the Mediterranean.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday at HMS Queen Elizabeth, Commodore Steve Moorhouse said the East Sea has been “full of controversy” with Russian military forces in Syria, resulting in frequent encounters with Russian ships and warplanes.

He also said the Russian warship had arrived within 16km (10 miles) from the carrier.
