No, really, don’t look up

Mu The magician, Colm Toibín‘s fictionalized biography of Thomas Mann, a fine Irish writer depicting a German general in a large hotel as World War II kicks off. “Evening musicians played lightweight waltzes,” as usual, and expensive after dinner, served on time.

The dramatic contrasts of events do not end there. British border patrons ask Mann to outline a plan to stay full of German names found in his book. Apparently he is preparing a book that Goethe eats with friends a hundred years ago. A spy is a dreamer. They shake him through.

“Eerie”, I said, is a “dream”. But the “natural” and “intelligent” are close to the mark. Even a hotelier or a Nobel laureate can do little to justify war. Without the thumbs up of historical standards, what is the danger of indulging in self-indulgence and nightmares? What seems like nonsense is a fact that we can call “self-care”. Think of the children who suffer adversity by invading their homeland. You need to convince me that they are safe and that you are really involved in it.

There are many reasons to change Adam McKay’s Do not look up. The imagery of the film is vague: the earth-wide comet works on climate change. A good illustration should make you doubt that it is a parable.

However, his real crime and apathy are his main issue. It depicts a world obsessed with politics, cell phones and black TV (the wonders of weapons, of course) as it faces death from above. This refusal, the denial of “looking up”, is portrayed here as the ultimate foolishness. No doubt, because of its complexity, it is. But the nature of human nature, the purpose of evolution that would benefit living things to this day, are questions that the film is not particularly interesting.

George Orwell once said that what he had was not art but “power to face the unpleasant”. The most obscure is the other words, where that power is distinguished by “my failures in everyday life”. The implication here is that constant contact with the realities of distress is weakening. And so, like exposure to asbestos or radiation, it has to be. That unknown people like Orwell exist is a priceless thing. But if only a few of us were like him, people would not be.

Nor is it clear that looking for the truth is a skillfully difficult skill than just looking at it from time to time before climbing. Think about empathy. You know that something bad is working but you are teaching yourself not to ignore it because of temporary relief or (from there) long-term survival. People can live better lives this way. I know I did this as a child.

It is a difficult but learning process. The world gives more reasons for this. The threat of European warfare has contributed to the ongoing plague and humiliation of Britain by its worst post-war government as a modern-day tragedy. Some of us, because of work, have to be engagement (he said, southern California). But if others choose not to stay, that is not wrong. It is not unreasonable. It is a hidden and personal choice that allows a lot of life to go on. This includes freezing at night. It also involves developing skills that can withstand the onslaught of collisions and political infighting Logan Run.

To deny it is foolish. Rejection gives life. This is what Tóibín says in his war-torn vignette in Europe. What is it Do not look up misses at all. The movie has less knowledge of how people travel through difficult times and in real life than the Prince “1999” song. Like a lot of encouragement, it shows people’s concern but a carefree understanding of them. What a disappointment we are to it.
