New York wants all city-based business organizations to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, which would be the strongest law to be issued anywhere in the US.
Bill de Blasio he said Monday the new law will take effect on December 27 and will apply to all private companies regardless of size. He did not say whether some of the workers would be allowed to take the test regularly, according to Biden officials as part of the national plan.
De Blasio says the move is aimed at curbing the spread of the Omicron genus, which has threatened to increase the city’s disease risk, which has nearly doubled in the past month.
The mayor told MSNBC newspaper: “We in New York City have decided to use the risk to take bold action to stop Covid growth and the risks it poses to all of us.”
He added: “Omicron is here, and they look like they are very contagious. The time is very dangerous with the winter months.”
Business groups have appealed New York’s decision in court, but De Blasio said he was confident he could survive.
Omicron’s radical changes have been confirmed in 17 U.S. states, and health officials expect a rapid spread. Scientists around the world are rushing to determine if it is more contagious, more lethal, or even more resistant to vaccines than any other ancient species.
Joe Biden, US President, announced in September its leadership will issue a mandate to all private companies with 100 employees or more to ensure that employees are vaccinated or free of the virus each week. The government imposes different responsibilities on government employees and contractors, as well as medical teams operating under Medicare and Medicaid insurance.
That it was worth it to take effect on January 4, but the judges have temporarily put the blocks in the rules that apply to employers and hospitals.
As the federal government fights its case through the courts, states and cities are enforcing their own laws instead. Many countries enacted vaccination legislation for health workers and educators, while Puerto Rico says there has been a need for vaccination or testing for all employers with 50 or more employees.
De Blasio also announced that anyone over the age of 12 who uses home-based food, entertainment or exercise should also receive double vaccination. Children aged 5 to 11 will be allowed to enter with only one vaccine.
“We are confident because it is everywhere,” said De Blasio, who is due to resign in a few weeks.
