Singles may be ready for new ideas in dating, but the basics will be competing with each other – not with corporate whales. One company, Matching Group, is behind some of the biggest online dating partners, including Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid, and Match; All of this represents about one-third of the market, according to October 2020 reports from IBISWorld. eHarmony manages another 12th division. The rest of the divisions are divided into nearly 2,000 partner companies, and most of them “have a very small market.” Often, guys compete with each other, doing little to bring out the Match Group as a great player.
This is one of the reasons why marketers are reluctant to pay for dating. Andrew Chen, a colleague at Andreessen Horowitz, mentioned several others in 2015 blog post: It is difficult to keep users, there are bribes built, and profitable results are not uncommon. 2019 analysis Defects found that although there were several newcomers online, the job center did not follow through.
