It’s no secret that companies are quietly analyze your data every time you go online. Mozilla believes people need to improve more on their content. That’s why it’s launching the Rally, a “private-first” sharing platform to give users more access to their collection, use, and sharing, the company has announced Friday.
“Cutting people to a poll for their information is a scam that hurts people, the community and the internet. We hope you need to know who will benefit from what you have found,” said Rebecca Weiss, who leads the Rally at Mozilla, the company. blog post.
These additions to Mozilla’s Firefox browser allow people to submit their browsers to computer scientists, sociologists, and other students studying online. The study focuses on developing new weapons, equipment, and “principles that can motivate people like you to create a better internet and fight technology,” according to Mozilla.
“The main purpose of this project is to support unprecedented training that makes major online applications more responsive,” the company said.
Together with the Rally, Mozilla is also launching WebScience tools to help researchers create more secure browser-based courses on the new platform. The company said WebScience was created to promote data reduction, a tendency to reduce data collection on demand for other purposes.
Mozilla’s already partnered with Princeton University for a collaborative study to better understand how people engage with news and misinformation about politics and covid-19. At some point in the future, Stanford University’s “Beyond the Paywall” project will also examine news consumption and the economics needed to build a more sustainable ecosystem for news outlets.
Ultimately, Weiss said Rally aims to identify and understand some of the “biggest problems of the internet” with the goal of making it a better place.
Rally is only available for US Firefox users over the age of 19, but Mozilla said it wanted to create access to more countries and browsers in the future.
