2014 polls

Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014 and began sparking a rift in eastern Ukraine.

In 2014, when Russian-backed separatists captured the two eastern cities of Donetsk and Lugansk, fears grew that the city of Kharkiv could collapse.

Pro-Moscow protesters attacked Molotov government officials with cocktails, while violence erupted with Ukrainian freedom fighters.

In time, Ukrainian troops were able to prevent Kharkiv from escaping Kyiv, from entering the war that has killed 13,000 people over the past eight years.

And now, protesters are insisting that Russian troops are not welcome in Kharkiv because Ukraine’s patriotism has begun.

“In 2014, there was a panic,” recalled Gayeva. “This time there is no fear but anger.”

For her part, Nadia Rynguina is the most famous.

“Things have changed, we have a military force to name, we have citizens ready to defend the country,” he said.

In response, Yury Shmylyov, 79, warned that “there will be no walking in the park” for Russian troops.

Galyna Kuts, a political scientist in Kharkiv and a member of the regional parliament, said Zelenskyy’s warning of “possible” work had caused quite a stir.

“Everyone was calling each other to ask what they should do, to escape,” he said during the meeting.

But after years of “living in constant danger,” he insists that the people of Kharkiv do everything for themselves.

“People have changed, they know how to live,” he said.

Oleksandr Gerasimov has filled his tank and is ready to move his family if necessary.

But the 39-year-old protester insisted he was “calm” because he did not believe Moscow could attack the Ukrainian army.
