Those few feet up to the whiteboard made Smith never come back. No one wrote on Steve Jobs’s white whiteboard. When Smith took the sign and wrote – he doesn’t remember what he wrote – he did Steve-icide. “I wanted to get out of there,” he says. “I never wanted that person’s pain in my life again.”
Smith spent the next year wrapped up in his office. He realized that computer users could benefit from his images, so he began writing a program that differed from what he called “floating images,” which allowed users to move objects more easily. “You can’t believe what you’re seeing,” says Eric Lyons, an Autodesk executive who saw the first show. That was not the case with Photoshop at the time. ”

One day Smith was at home with his wife and two sons when he “felt great pain” in his chest. Hundreds of bacteria entered his lungs, the bladder needed to undergo surgery. One month later, after sailing to Vancouver, he was in pain. The same thing happened in his second lung. To date, it accounts for only about one third of all lungs. “I asked, ‘Why did I receive it?’ he says. “My answer is, stress.” Catmull admits: “Basically, it was a traumatic experience in my life, which came as a result of Steve’s delay.”
The months that were lost were devastating when they began. At the time, Photoshop launched a competition called “sections.” Altamira’s sale was low, and the company needed a cable. Smith was introduced by Nathan Myhrvold, director of Microsoft Research. “I just need advertising support from Microsoft,” Smith said. Instead, Myhrvold bought the company, though he wanted Smith more than his business. Smith lived there for four years and retired in 1999. “I thought he didn’t care what I thought,” she says.
Smith’s next move shocked his friends: He became a genealogist. He began researching his legacy in detail, and in 2010 he was named Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists. This respect is limited to 50 living people, and it requires a strong vote.
