Lufthansa and MSC are looking to play a key role in Alitalia’s successor

German Lufthansa and Swiss-Italian Shipping conglomerate MSC have expressed interest in playing a major role in ITA Airways, Alitalia’s successor, demonstrating how the epidemic could change the European industry.

The MSC from Geneva on Monday said it wanted to form an alliance with the Italian government, which owns ITA Airways, along with Lufthansa, and set a 90-day deadline for special talks.

MSC, the world’s largest freight forwarder, added that the alliance would help increase air traffic control, part of the epidemic, and strengthen the Frankfurt airline in Europe.

ITA said MSC and Lufthansa had asked the Italian government to reserve a small portion of the aircraft. The German carrier confirmed the agreement with the shipping team without providing further details.

The Italian government came after ITA Airways launched its first airline in October, coming out of The disappearance of 75-year-old Alitalia, an Italian flag bearer after years of loss and rescue by government officials.

Rome took control of Alitalia in 2020 after trying to find a common buyer failed when the plague disrupted international flights. ITA seized the Alitalia brand for just € 90m, close to the asking price of € 290m.

The Italian government says the new carrier should be a success by 2025, which Alitalia failed to achieve in the 21st century.

Ever since the chairman of the ITA, Alfredo Altavilla, has said the new carrier needs to work with another aircraft to provide a competitive edge for other European officials.

He told the Financial Times on Monday that what is possible is the “most pressing approach” of the ITA.

“It is a great opportunity for us to expand the freight business, and Lufthansa is a great solution for riders,” he said.

Air traffic controllers and other professionals he predicted a merger wave as companies emerge from the coronavirus crisis, and the alliance between Lufthansa and ITA provides some interesting evidence of how carriers are becoming more independent after the epidemic.

Lufthansa has grown from its origins as a German airline into a European airline with five aircraft including Swiss and Austrian flag carriers.

The group received billions of financial aid during the outbreak but has made significant progress in rehabilitating itself return to profit in its most recent issue.
