U.S. regulators have approved an Alzheimer’s treatment from Biogen that has been divided into scientists, marking a momentous moment for sufferers and their families.
Aducanumab is designed for patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Biogen is said to reduce the severity of the disease by breaking down proteins that form in the brain.
The treatment has been surrounded by controversy for years, and many scientists have criticized its acceptance, saying it does not work.
The US Food and Drug Administration’s announcement announced Monday is significant because no new drug has been approved for the disease over the years, and there are very few drugs. About 6m people in the US have Alzheimer’s disease.
“We are well aware of the interest shown in this,” said Patrizia Cavazzoni, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, adding that “patients with Alzheimer’s disease have the necessary and necessary new treatment to cope with the disease.”
The sale of Biogen shares was suspended before the election.
