Joe Biden has arrested Jane Hartley, a Democratic fundraiser and former ambassador to France, as US ambassador to the UK, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Hartley’s appointment comes after weeks of uncertainty over Biden’s intentions in the matter. Mike Bloomberg, former mayor of New York City; Colin Powell, former secretary of state; and Ted Kaufman, a former Delaware senator and former ally, have both been nominated.
According to one observer, Hartley was linked to his work ethic and his ability as US ambassador to France during Barack Obama’s presidency.
Arriving in Paris the Franco-American talks are expected to be driven by financial crisis, but cooperation in the fight against terrorism began shortly after the Charlie Hebdo satanic attacks in January 2015 and the Bataclan concert hall and other venues across Paris later that year.
If confirmed by the Senate, Hartley will be charged with overseeing US-UK relations at a a very important moment, and Biden and Boris Johnson, the UK’s prime minister, are trying to strengthen ties despite Britain’s departure from the EU.
Biden traveled to the UK for his first foreign trip as president last month. He took part in the G7 summit in Cornwall, held a middle meeting with Johnson, and visited Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.
The White House has refused to comment on Hartley’s election, which was first reported by The Washington Post.
The U.S. president in recent weeks has appointed a number of high-profile officials, including foreign affairs officials, funders and politicians from both sides.
Recent elections are Jeff Flake, a former Arizona Republican filmmaker, to become US ambassador to Turkey, and Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles mayor, to US ambassador to India.
In Europe, Biden has appointed Denise Campbell Bauer, a prominent finance minister and Obama’s envoy to Belgium, as ambassador to France, and to appoint Amy Gutmann, President of the University of Pennsylvania, Germany.
Hartley worked as a Carter supervisor in the 1970’s, then worked long hours at public service, including broadcasting and directing two financial advisers – the Management and the G7 Group.
He was a major contributor to Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012. He also sponsored a bid for President Biden in 2020, even though he had a small share of the money.
In recent years, Hartley has served on the board of trustees of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Harvard public school inspection committee, and the board of trustees at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
She is married to Ralph Schlosstein, CEO of Evercore, a financial banking and consulting firm.
