The robbers killed 100 people in northern Burkina Faso

Terrorists have killed at least 100 civilians in an attack on a village in northern Burkina Faso, a tragic event in recent years that has plagued West Africa, leaving thousands dead and missing more than 1m.

The government said the robbers were terrorists and said they had attacked Solhan, which is close to the border with Niger, on Friday night, burning houses and a local market.

“The military and security forces are on the lookout for and crack down on those who are doing this,” President Roch Kabore said. “We need to be united and united in the fight against these evils.”

No group has done so, but local groups allied with Isis and al-Qaeda have increased threats in the region since this year.

Last year, violence in Burkina Faso dropped dramatically as a result of an unplanned ceasefire before elections in November. But investigators say the conflict has been disrupted ever since.

The attack comes less than a month after at least 30 people were killed by gunmen in nearby Kolydel. The border between Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, has become a safe haven, as well as a force to fight terrorism in the Sahel under the auspices of the French army 5,000 Operation Barkhane.

France intervened in the region in 2013 to root out terrorists who had seized northern Mali. Despite the presence of 13,000 UN troops, as well as French and domestic troops, violence has spread to central Mali, and has spread to Niger and Burkina Faso, where there is heavy casualties, with many governments falling into government control.

On top of the violence, the region is facing political crisis, which could affect the fight against jihadism. This week France suspended its alliance with the Malian army after the ceasefire second coup within a year.

In April, another militant friend, Chad – whose soldiers are thought to be the most knowledgeable and helpful in the region – faced a crisis with their strong leader Idriss Deby killed by terrorists.

The military has quickly established a son for its long-term president, but questions remain as to whether it will be a strong ally for Chadian allies who will fight for supremacy in the armed forces.
