How you can see ‘piko’ chancers working

“This is going to be very special,” laughed an Australian journalist Instagram post. How right he was. While interviewing a radio station for questioning, Adele, a British pop artist, found out later that she had missed an email with a picture of her new album, 30. Talking about the disc was the whole reason for their meeting. “This is the most important email I have ever received,” he said. Communication was banned.

The article came out the same day as Boris Johnson given clear statements from UK manufacturing companies at the CBI, the largest group of co-workers in the UK. Instead, he lost his place in his writings – a plea “forgive me” – and turned to talk about Peppa Pigs. I am not a public speaker, but asking for forgiveness can be a mistake.

As examples of multiplication, all of these were impressive failures, criticized for being incompetent and disrespectful. We have all been to meetings, watching movies or watching talks where participants are cheating, failing to do their homework. Some (many of us) may have been wrong.

The cave is interesting. It’s a very small task, to begin with. And it can seem like a lot of fun: making its experts human instead of robotic, taking business history for granted. Few people can pull honestly.

However, beware of faux-wingers (FWs). Anyone who goes to school is more familiar with the person who goes to the exam claiming that he or she has not changed, hiding the fact that he or she studied hard. FW’s spin fall is a mistake that can cause you to fall under your face.

One of the top tools for FW is stability. It sounds simple but can be challenging. I called a friend of FW who I knew from university, where he was reluctant to look at different types of biscuits. Today he is a prosecutor. Unsurprisingly, she has left the biscuits behind, and prepares cases with repetitive ideas, methods and answers in detail, reams notes, including gags and illustrations that seem to be made instantly, to keep the audience engaged. “You have to be very careful if you want to disrupt,” he says.

Another friend prepares athletes to watch TV. They work with two actors (frustrating, not to mention embarrassed) who have very different ideas. One puts the work and looks good and natural in the press conferences, the other does not work hard and carelessly and incorrectly tries to say the words that were fed.

Confusion is Johnson’s schtick. Broadcaster Jeremy Vine once he wrote an interesting story watching a prime minister getting ready to speak after dinner and writing a few random notes as he was about to ascend the stage and forget half of the joke. Just seeing him do the same thing – and speaking the same thing – on another job. In many cases, the Prime Minister can be seen as a high-profile FW.

Those who are at the top of their game can be allowed to return the real thing, without having to prepare because they are very experienced. But as Johnson did recently (which seems to be true) and Adele’s interviewer, there is no excuse for an experienced expert who fails to explain the basics.

It can be hard to know the lies from a real winger. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, a psychologist at the organization who researched confidence, says that we are not good enough to monitor our performance, either individually or as others. And, as they put it, “if you don’t know well, you don’t get good at monitoring how you work”. (In other words, a Dunning Kruger results.)

One of the distractions of the modern world of work, Chamorro-Premuzic says, “your hard work, skill, and well-paid work, make it difficult for others to know whether you are doing well or not”. In other words, too much complexity makes the task difficult to judge.

Those who are overconfident can often do very little work: they can get rid of it, but there is a good chance they will not succeed. “Low self-esteem can improve performance because it means preparation and learning,” says Chamorro-Premuzic. What is worrying (like me) is very comforting.
