Google has always been to cut a link that has been in Chrome’s omnibox search bar over the past few years, stating that it makes it easier for users to identify reliable domains. However, it has now deleted the test and will show the full URL, as per the developer details document seen by Android Police.
At some point, Google was ready remove this link completely and just display search terms. Soon, that simple omnibox by hiding “https: // www” and showing only the name. At the time, Google said it was trying to make things easier for the average user. “It’s hard to read, it’s hard to know which side to rely on, and I don’t think URLs work as a good way to describe a place,” Chrome manager Adrienne Porter Felt told Wires in 2018.
However, Google once lost www. and m. from the pages, critics to Funny Stories and elsewhere he said that the two different pages could look similar, which could expose users to abuse – among other things.
Google has now penalized and admitted that the idea did not work out as expected. “Getting rid of simple temptations,” wrote technical director Emily Stark. “These tests did not move the appropriate safety test, so we do not initiate.”
This change is now in Chrome 91, with only “https: //” encrypted. However, it’s easy to show this by just right-clicking or ctrl on omnibox and selecting “always show complete URLs,” such as Android Police he said.
