Prosecutors in Paris are set to investigate former French environmental minister led by President Emmanuel Macron on charges of rape and rape, after several women came forward with charges decades ago.
Nicolas Hulot, a natural rights activist who rose to prominence in France as a TV presenter on nature, spent a long time in the French prime minister when Macron came to power in 2017.
He was one of the foremost examples of Macron’s efforts to bring new blood into politics, but he quit his job for more than a year, saying he was disappointed with the gradual change of green policies.
Four women testified in Hulot’s sexual assault case on France 2 Thursday. Two more women came back, France 2 said. Hulot denied the allegations, which began to appear before the investigation, and told BFM TV on Thursday: “I have never deceived anyone by force.”
A former rival to lead the green party in France, Hulot said he has given up political life.
France appeared to be responding divisively to the #MeToo group that has spread around the world following allegations of rape by Hollywood filmmaker Harvey Weinstein. When a younger generation of feminist activists launched a French national social campaign – #balancetonporc, literally “fuck your pig” – high statistics such as Catherine Deneuve signed the letter defending the right of men to “abuse” women.
But more and more French cases are emerging, with various #MeToo campaigns attacking top political parties, TV personalities and members French intelligentsia.
Before the trial, some politicians questioned Hulot’s case, with French Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti telling LCI radio that “justice should not be given on television or on television”.
But Hulot’s response to the allegations also led to criticism, with some of his allies withdrawing from him.
In a TV interview, Hulot did not appear on camera but responded to reporters by phone, saying it was not helpful to fight, and that the mother’s words were “sacred”.

Elisabeth Moreno, who oversees gender equality in the state, criticized Hulot on Twitter for his abusive comments about self-defense on TV, in which he joked about her body and how it should be a barrier to women’s success.
Marlène Schiappa, a former prime minister of gender equality and now a senior official in the Interior Ministry, publicly denounced her former colleague when the rape warrant was held in 2018. she has fallen. Friday said “the two are different”.
