It is a well-known story of this generation: an expert speaks, people take action. It is usually polite. But for those who do not like the latter, the resistance is stronger. They are looking for some truth.
Depending on where you fall, choose your problem: Covid vaccine, climate change, Brexit, or even a lunar eclipse. But in the meantime, it’s Netflix’s jokes about the comet hitting Earth, Do not look up.
This video is taking a strange turn. Experts here are some of the most outspoken critics of the newspaper. In just a few days, there were some critical comments on Twitter and it manifested itself on a recent interview, Reddit. His failure in the hands of the opponents has made it work – and I’m not sure I should be wanted.
How can the film, which has been aired on Netflix since Christmas, be a success? It features actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as astronomers, Meryl Streep plays Trump-like president, Ariana Grande as a diving star, Mark Rylance as a rocket-launching tech billionaire, and a dark undertone: it’s not a comet coming or the obvious issue, climate change, is the problem. It’s us. In the face of the planetary killer of the event, we must choose the holes in the argument.
And the critics did. The Washington Post called it “shaggy”. The Guardian likened it to a Facebook political meme sent by a former relative. Danny Leigh’s comment on FT had a lot of his jokes and the Daily Mail published an old favorite story: “Leonardo DiCaprio is looking forward to a new film. Do not look up it will be a ‘wake-up call’ for climate change (so will they eventually leave special jets?) ”.
The essay became similar to the events in which the conspirators say: “Who cares about the experts, I just believe what I see with my own eyes.” Or, as one Reddit commentator put it: “They do not own my opinion. I would have believed them had they become scientists. ”
In the real contradictory form, some points began to emerge. The old metrics of the video were how many stars were awarded – the lowest I ever found Do not look up was two out of five by The Guardian.
Netflix has its own statistics, which you can’t compare with the traditional box office. It announced that it had 263m “viewing hours” in the first two weeks when it was released (not a staggering number considering the film is about two and a half hours long). It is one of the top 10 Netflix movies in 94 countries, and is the third most popular movie on the platform.
Other ways to change people’s minds and other commenters: actress Susan Sarandon, weather scientist Michael Mann and author Joyce Carol Oates have all shared their role on Twitter.
Also contributing to Netflix’s viewing of Do not look up, I found myself watching Manufacturers at Christmas. For the first time, her first Philadelphia-themed show was played to make her way to the theater – the bag-mother was one of the few well-known – not laughing. When it arrived in New York, the eyes of the film’s critic Renata Adler fell on it. “Shoddy”, “gross”, “unequal”, he wrote.
But Peter Sellers saw the first film of the film by accident and did 1968 similar to blue-tick tweeting. He published a full-page commercial in Variety and the New York Times called it a “successful movie” and “amazing”.
Failure turned into success. Theaters began to fill in, the weaknesses turned into strengths and it became a popular film on the subject of our relationship with Hitler: a mockery of overcoming fear.
Do not look up director Adam McKay may want to be ridiculed by politicians and journalists for promoting fears of climate change.
Minor comments have been provided with tools to do this. What has been criticized and criticized by them is the prediction that the union of special interests is making the film because it is being ridiculed. McKay criticized those who failed to understand the dangers of climate change and the importance of his film as a love storytelling robot. “WHY DOES THEIR FACE BE SO CLOSED?”
So the problem is who can listen. A filmmaker and platform who tell you that their work is good? Silent scientists who grind data or noise people who produce ideas, even on video? Informed critics or people? And if the only thing we can agree on is “not political”, then who should change things?
To be honest, I was not a robot. I thought the film was a disturbing dissection of what is happening now. Likewise, by the way, he made a lot of comments, if you read them all.
