When people complain that robots are coming to get jobs, I don’t think “poetry” is what they think. Enter Ai-Da, a highly realistic, AI-powered robot based on a magical valley that can draw, draw, draw, and write poetry.

Friday was the latest in a series of AI-driven artistic performances since the robot’s first solo exhibition in 2019. Gallerist Aidan Meller created Ai-Da in collaboration with Engineered Arts, a U.K.-based robotics company, and scientists at the universities of Oxford and Leeds.
Speaking to controller, Meller said the Ai-Da language is so advanced that it can utter 20,000 words in 10 seconds. Although his captors are involved in the “restraint change” he possesses, the words and sentences in his poems are composed by AI.
“People are very skeptical that robots are not doing much, but the reality is that language models are very advanced, and in 95% of the evolutionary cases, it is because you have done a lot,” he said. He noted that because of the rapid development of language models in recent years, they will soon “become completely unconventional.”
In an interview with CNN, Meller said that Ai-Da’s ability to copy human writing is “impressive, but if you could read it you would never know that it was not written by man.”
“The Ai-Da project was designed to address the issue of AI culture in order to mimic human and human behavior,” he said. “We now realize that technology has a profound impact on all aspects of our lives and we want to understand the scope of this technology and what it can teach us personally.”
With all that being said, Meller described Ai-Da’s idea of competing with human poetry as “extremely confusing,” the Guardian said. Ai-Da was not created on behalf of artists, but as a tool to help us understand our systems in order to create better ways as the world grows more and more online.
