Covid forces Southern Railway to suspend operations in London Victoria

The plague has disrupted railway operations in Britain’s second-largest city, with a major operator shutting down all trains bound for London Victoria, citing a shortage of coronavirus-related staff.

The Govia Thameslink Railway says its Southern Railway operations entering and leaving Victoria – to areas such as Southampton, Brighton and Eastbourne – will be suspended until January 10.

The Gatwick Express, which runs between the airport and London Victoria, will be suspended after shutting down engineering works over the Christmas period.

The ban shows how the rapid spread of Omicron coronavirus has spread the economy.

Angie Doll, a temporary operations manager at GTR, said: “Due to the challenges we are facing with Covid affecting many of our friends, we have decided to spend less time starting January. Sorry if this affects your trip.”

Other railway operators – including Avanti West Coast, Greater Anglia, London North Eastern Railway, Northern, ScotRail, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales – will be forced to suspend trains or change jobs if workers’ problems arise.

In the seven days to December 29, almost all employees in all shipping companies were 8.9 percent and about one in 20 ships was removed, according to the Rail Delivery Group, which represents workers in the UK. This is almost double the normal rate.

“Our employees are working hard and, like everyone else, are more likely to be infected,” RDG said. “We will not be able to run all the trains we have planned and there may be some upgrades.”

On Wednesday, daily Covid-19 cases in the UK rose to 183,037, including new records in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

England has reduced the grace period to seven days to reduce interference with government operations but cabinet has refused to be forced to follow the US by reducing it to five days.

As part of the temporary ban on Southern operations to London Victoria, no locomotives will be operated at Battersea Park, Clapham Junction or Wandsworth Common station and other services will be diverted to London Bridge instead.

Some railway operators also face operational difficulties due to group activities. The RMT agreement confirmed that neglect would take place Friday at CrossCountry Trains by staff at Edinburgh Waverley station.

Elsewhere, freight networks have been hit by another crisis that could spark economic woes in the country. Metro Shipping, a freight forwarder, says a train wreck at London Gateway has stopped trains from one of the UK’s largest railways, causing heavy traffic.

DP World, which uses the terminal, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
