Taiwan buys 20,000 bottles of Lithuanian rum after Chinese snub | Worldwide Trade

Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp are said to have bought the beer after hearing that Chinese customs banned its import.

The Taiwanese company bought 20,400 bottles of Lithuanian rum, which China refused to allow the country to help the Baltic nation in diplomatic crisis, according to the South China Morning Post.

Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp. said it bought the beer from MV Group Production last month after hearing that Chinese customs were denying it permission to sell it, the newspaper reported on Tuesday.

“TTL stood up at the right time, bought rum and brought it to Taiwan,” the company said in a statement, adding that alcohol would be sold in the market. “Lithuania supports us and we support Lithuania – TTL wants this to happen.”

The General Administration of Customs in China did not immediately respond to a request sent by fax for comment.

China has been angry with Lithuania since November, when Taiwan opened a Baltic embassy in Vilnius, which Beijing claims has violated its Chinese policy.

‘It should be in vain’

The European Union later raided Lithuania’s claims that China had imposed “unannounced sanctions” on its trade with the World Trade Organization. China denies banning exports to Lithuania.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a regular press conference in Beijing he was unaware of the issue, adding: “I tell you that the attempt by Taiwanese authorities to secure their independence in Taiwan through dollar negotiations is not possible. . ”
