For years, gamers I have sworn both up and down Disagreement-Not late – is the best desktop chat app. But as with any big deal, there is room for improvement. Enter BetterDiscord.
WellDiscord allows users to create Discord computer software to enjoy their preferences as well as UX, and highlight some of the best features in their lives big and small. Just download and install the free program, and select plug-ins and skins from the BetterDiscord database. Some changes are self-explanatory, such as a read list of servers sent by users and a new interface. (This app does not work with the mobile app or browser.) Your Discord image profile can be the face of your favorite web, and you can delete the Evil Gift button to the right of the box. You can make Discord look like it was three years ago or add it to the Google Translate options.
This experience remembers the early days of the internet, when Winamp’s black and green skins were popular, and everything downloaded on the internet was subject to change – legally or not. BetterDiscord is not a legitimate program; and possibly violates Discord rules, which prohibit changing Discord. But the app has been launched more than 5.3 million times since 2015, and developers say they have not seen Discord take action for users in changing client settings.
BetterDiscord is the work of a lavish volunteer team, led by 27-year-old full-time engineer Zack Rauen. The project began a few months after Discord was launched in 2015. Originally, BetterDiscord was to connect small holes in the chat app and add new features like search. Rauen, who jumped on the bandwagon in 2016, said he started developing a plug-in that allows users of various “roles” in the server to select different types of names and their profiles. Afterwards, he wrote not to ignore Discord’s minor requirements, and to remove buttons that were not in use.
Since then, the work has grown. And although Discord has been integrating into other features that are only available through BetterDiscord, BetterDiscord is still a component. Many users have provided skins and plug-ins, for example, to describe who has “acted” on the message, to know how many friends are online, to indicate the number of server members, or to compromise NSFW records. BetterDiscord’s three best plug-ins have been downloaded for over 100,000 pages. Some of the best-selling ones: one that adds a Spotify control panel, another that shows the amount of time you’ve been calling voice, and the third one that shows all the hidden channels of the server.
“We’ve seen new users coming in because they like the theme changes, and we’ve seen them come because they like the changes that plug-ins can give you,” Rauen said. Since most of the content is user-generated, he and others perform manual manipulations on all possible scenarios, looking for the wrong number. He plans to launch a BetterDiscord store later this year, enabling users to browse, download, and install extras from the Discord window.
Things like this can be especially helpful for new Discord users – and they exist many more now than a year or two ago.
