Animal Counting and Using Zero. How Far Do They Go?

One of the definitions of the same structure that changes in different brains is that it is the solution to the problem that exists on a computer. “It’s exciting, because it proves to be the best way,” said Avarguès-Weber. There may be physical or other internal problems in which the brain can change zero and other numbers. “There may be very few ways in which you can create a mechanism to encode numbers,” Vallortigara said.

However, just because crows and monkeys seem to be reporting the same idea as zero does not mean that it is the only way. “It could be that different responses have been made in natural history, to evolutionary change, to produce similar statistics,” Vallortigara said. The researchers have to study other animals to find out. In the paper recently published in Cerebral CortexFor example, Vallortigara and colleagues identified the brain area in zebra fish that appears to correspond to the number of numbers, although they have not yet tested the animal’s ability to test zero.

Bees can also do amazing things when the background of their words is clear. Mu research published last year, BouDi and his colleagues “showed that the bumblebee is counted in a different way” after being presented with four items, he said. He thinks that his findings suggest that bees’ perceptions, including zero, may be significantly different from what has been observed so far.

But perhaps the most important question in removing numbers from the brains of various animals is not how technology works but why it exists. Why should animals recognize its quantity? Why has evolution repeatedly asserted that animals cannot understand that four is not less than five and that “four squares” are somehow equal to “four squares”?

According to Vallortigara, one reason may be that mathematics can be very important. “Animals constantly have to do the math. Even ordinary animals, ”he said. “If you have unknown numbers, it’s easy to do so.” Writing numerical information allows the brain to perform more complex calculations.

Another possibility is that understanding the zero — and the number of numbers — would simply come as a result of requiring the brain to recognize physical objects in nature.
