The U.S. Deputy Secretary of State will travel to China on Sunday after Washington and Beijing terminated an agreement that threatened to disrupt the first summit between the two sides since the two met in Alaska in March.
Wendy Sherman will travel to Tianjin on a two-day state visit for talks with Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, according to US officials. He will be the head of Biden to China, four months after the first international conference public outrage.
The former ambassador is expected to travel to China at the end of an Asian tour that includes a stop at Japan, South Korea and Mongolia.
But the government department did not register China on its first trip after Beijing he refused to give a meeting and Wang, instead offered a smaller employee, which the US described as negligent.
“He has confirmed that he met face-to-face with Wang Yi,” said a United States official. “It simply came to our notice then. . . Only when we are sure that we will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful and meaningful conversations. ”
The summit will come at a crucial time in the US-China relationship, with Joe Biden standing firm on a number of issues including Beijing Conversation on the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, the persecution of the Uyghurs and a few other Muslims in Xinjiang and the military events around Taiwan. Washington this week criticized the Chinese Ministry of Defense, its technology ministry, for registration of gangs committing online conspiracies in the US.
A U.S. diplomat said the Tianjin conference would follow Alaska Convention, in which both sides expressed their views on the relationship that deteriorated after the difficult years of the Trump administration.
“We believe we need to take immediate action to keep the lines of communication open to show the People’s Republic of China what healthy and responsible competition looks like,” said the US Deputy Secretary-General.
Washington wants to very dedicated by Chinese embassies and military officials but have been repeatedly frustrated. Kurt Campbell, a senior member of the White House Asia, recently said Wang and Yang Jiechi, a Chinese economist who was also at the Alaska summit, “is not nearly a hundred miles away” from inside President Xi Jinping.
The US did not disclose what Sherman and Wang had discussed. But the aim of the new law was to create more meetings that would lead Biden and Xi to negotiate at the G20 summit in Italy.
