Problem of The disease known as sepsis is the number one killer in US hospitals. It is therefore not surprising that more than 100 offices use the early warning system provided by Epic Systems, which is the leading provider of U.S. electronics services. But a new study using information from nearly 30,000 patients in University of Michigan hospitals shows that Epic’s system is not performing well. The authors say they missed two-thirds of the cases of sepsis, which are found in the hospital unnoticed, and they issue false alarms.

Singh and his Michigan colleagues tested the predictive nature of Epic on the records of about 30,000 patients living in approximately 40,000 hospitals in 2018 and 2019. The researchers found that Epic’s algorithms paid for people who contracted sepsis such as the CDC and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. And he compared the warnings that the system would have to have because of sexually transmitted infections linked to staff, who did not see the Epic sepsis information of patients being included in the study.
The researchers say their findings suggest that Epic’s practice may not make the hospital more susceptible to sepsis and may burden staff with unnecessary information. The company’s change did not detect two-thirds of the nearly 2,500 cases of sepsis in Michigan data. It would alert 183 patients who contracted the disease but did not receive timely treatment.
