The head of the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center in Indonesia, Andiani, said residents of the Semeru slopes are advised to live 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the crater’s mouth.
He also abandoned tourism and mines on the shores of Lake Besuk Kobokan.
The search and rescue operations ended Friday and 36 people are still unaccounted for. More than 100 people were injured, 22 of them critically.
