Italy Horror master Mario Bava led the 1963 anthology, made up of three legends inspired by Frankenstein’s own beast, Boris Karloff, who also starred in a single episode. The various dangers represented include a killer who loves to make threatening phone calls, a thirsty vampire (or “wurdulak,” as he is referred to in the film), and a cruel corpse stolen; all the articles push the envelope on racism and violence, and all benefit from the beautiful portrait that was the symbol of Bava.
