At least nine people have been killed and 45 others injured when a train crosses over East Jalpaiguri district.

Rescuers have found four bodies overnight while removing 12 trains from a train passing through West Bengal state in India, increasing the number of casualties to 9, the railway official said.

At least 45 people were injured in the crash on Thursday when coaches left the tracks and three others were knocked down, said Rajiv Jain, a spokesman for the railway ministry.

The rescue operation was completed and the road was repaired to restore order in the area, Jain said Friday.

Photographs taken in the aftermath of the crash showed passengers trapped in twisted debris and debris as rescuers tried to pull them out.

The train was en route to Guwahati in Assam state from Bikaner, Rajasthan, when the accident happened in Jalpaiguri state.

All the injured are being treated at the hospital, police chief Debarshi Dutta said.

Railway manager Guneet Kaur said the cause of the accident was being investigated. He said the government would provide compensation to the families of those who died and all those injured.

Accidents are common on major but old railways in India.

Security standards have always been a concern for government systems, which operate 9,000 locomotives and transport about 23 million people daily.

In 2016, 127 people were killed when 14 coaches left the state of Uttar Pradesh in one of India’s most serious train accidents.
