Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Saturday that 51 Americans had been selected for risk of “terrorist” killings of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as well as human rights abuses.
United States Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mark Milley, Central Command chief Kenneth McKenzie, Pentagon officials, and officials from several US organizations across the region are among those affected.
The sanctions are very symbolic because the people mentioned are not considered to have any property that could be confiscated by Iranian officials.
Last year, Iran imposed sanctions on former US President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and eight others who participated in the assassination of Solomon near the Baghdad airport in Iraq. The commission also demanded that he be arrested through Interpol.
The move on Saturday comes shortly after the second anniversary of Solomon’s assassination in a US-led Trump flight.
At a commemoration earlier this week, President Ebrahim Raisi addressed Trump, Pompeo and others. should be tested in the “court of justice”, warning that otherwise Iran and its so-called “resistance axis” which Solomon has called for retaliation.
Iran has also requested the UN General Assembly and Security Council to to take action against the US and Israel – which also accuses of providing aid.
The IRGC on Friday unveiled a number of its locally made weapons that it said were used in their 2020 uprising against two US bases in Iraq in retaliation for the assassination.
The Trump administration in 2018 unilaterally abandoned the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and launched a campaign against Iran, which included heinous sanctions.
Iran and the remaining signatories – France, Russia, China, United Kingdom and Germany – are now in intense talks in Vienna trying to restore the treaty. Biden’s top representatives participate in the indirect negotiations.
Iran wants more US sanctions lifted before reducing its nuclear program, which has grown rapidly since its introduction.
