President Joe Biden has pressured Russian President Vladimir Putin to take action against crooks in his country who have been criticized for the latest programs affecting thousands of companies around the world, warning them to protect US networks they consider important.

“I made it very clear to him that the United States expects the rescue operation to come from his country, although it is not supported by the government, we expect him to take action,” Biden told reporters at the White House on Friday, about an hour’s call from the Russian leader.

Putin told Biden that their cyber security talks should be “professional and lost” and that they had received a “deep and meaningful” agreement on the issue, according to a statement from the Kremlin. He said the US had not asked Russia for any help with last month’s incident.

In a statement, the White House said in a statement that Biden “emphasized the need for Russia to take action to disrupt Russian-backed rescue teams and was committed to continuing to deal with the threats to the liberation struggle.”

Biden reaffirmed that the US “will take action to protect its people and its necessary weapons in the face of these challenges,” he said.

The US president is facing pressure to respond to a crackdown on alleged eagles in Russia, including last week’s massacre that affected more than 1,000 businesses in at least 17 countries and the Republican committee’s uprising.

Russian-affiliated eagle-wielding REvil is believed to be behind the plot, which affected the IT monitoring programs developed by Kaseya Ltd. and Russian government crackdowns are thought to be responsible for the RNC threats, according to people familiar with the matter. Biden officials did not say that Russia had attacked.

The wounds continued even after Biden set up red lines during a shootout with Putin last month in Geneva. Biden said he had given Putin a list of 16 high-risk states that, if caught, could lead to retaliation in the US.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Friday that REvil “is working in Russia and other countries around the world.”

But he said: “We have no other or new evidence that indicates that the Russian government has initiated these threats.”

Cyber officials from the US and Russia are due to hold talks next week, he said at a press conference.
