Sudanese women’s rights activist Amira Osman arrested for terrorism | Women’s Rights Issues

The UN is expressing outrage over Osman’s arrest, citing ‘the example of violence against women’ s rights in Sudan.

Armed men have arrested a well-known Sudanese women’s rights activist, Amira Osman, during a raid on her home in Khartoum, Sudan, her sister said.

Osman’s arrest comes in the middle, what the freedom fighters say, a a campaign to build people up of pro-democracy activists since the military took over in October.

The United Nations in Sudan said on Twitter that it was outraged by Osman’s arrest, citing a “pattern of violence against women’s rights activists” that would reduce political participation.

Sudanese security officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Some prominent political figures have been released since then October 25 coup, but human rights activists say some have been imprisoned and arrests continue.

About 15 men in masquerade masks were abducted after Osman seized his house in the Al Riyadh area on Saturday night, his sister Amani Osman told Reuters reporters on Sunday.

“We do not know where he is and the security forces who took him away. We are concerned about his arrest and illness, “he said, adding that Osman was partially paralyzed in an accident a few years ago.

Osman campaigned for women’s rights in Sudan under former President Omar al-Bashir, a former president removed during the 2019 riots.

He was arrested in 2013 under state law for refusing to wear a scarf over his head and was found guilty and fined in 2002 for wearing trousers.

Women took part in protests that led to the downfall of al-Bashir. The transitional government later repealed the ban on women’s clothing and behavior, although some restrictions remained.
