Suspected terrorists have smuggled Indian troops into the northeast state of Manipur, officials say.
At least five Indian soldiers and two civilians have been killed in an attack by militants in northeastern Manipur state in India, officials said.
The suspected militants hid a group of Indian soldiers on Saturday who were on a tour of a remote village in Churachandpur state, a police official in the state capital, Imphal, said.
The deceased include Colonel Assam Rifles, an Indian military officer, his wife and son. Four other soldiers were killed in the attack.
Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck.
Security forces rushed to the scene and launched an operation to investigate the attackers.
Police say the attack appears to have been carried out by a group of Manipur People’s Liberation Army militants who are fighting against Indian rule in the state. So far no militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
“The terrorist attacks on the Assam Rifles group are very painful and wrong. The country has lost five brave soldiers, including Commanding Officer 46, Assam Rifles, and two relatives. My condolences to the bereaved families. The culprits will soon be tried,” Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said on Twitter. .

To him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the “sacrifice” of those killed “will never be forgotten.”

In northeastern India, bordering China, Myanmar and Bangladesh, it is a region in which most separatist, ethnic, or left-wing militias operate, demanding independence from the independent state.
About 20 terrorist groups are operating in Manipur, which is expected to go to the polls early next year.
According to data from the South Asia Terrorism Portal, more than 6,370 people have been killed in terrorist attacks in Manipur since 1992. In 2015, at least 20 soldiers were killed in armed attacks on government forces.
