The Senator will issue a law to protect the information of journalists in the state

Today, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) he wants new money, called Protect Reporters from Excessive State Suppression (PRESS) Act, which would protect media records from being confiscated by the government. This comes a few months from the Department of Justice admitted receiving phone calls and emails from journalists to Washington newspaper, CNN and New York Times to find sources.

Wyden stated in his statement that there should be a law “to protect journalists from government censorship” and that “it should be enshrined in black law.” He said: “Trump officials have tracked down journalists who suspect them of being innocent in their search to find out where they came from and prevent Americans from learning the truth about Trump’s disobedience and corruption.”

Although Biden’s DOJ had initially defended the use of suppoenas, the President soon said it was wrong, to stop the practice. Attorney General Merrick Garland also called for new legislation on media cases. He also met with the officials of the three aforementioned organizations to discuss the matter.

While most countries have some kind of security law for journalists, the federal government does not. One of the difficulties in experimenting with the law was the way in which a journalist is described as well as actions that need to be protected. For example, federal law should provide information on how to protect the privacy of a journalist and the protection of national security.

Wyden’s law requires that journalists be protected from jurisdictional jurisdictional disputes, but it does allow for diversity of information on whether to prevent terrorism, identify terrorists, or whether to prevent violence or death.
