Cities are struggling to cope with the floodwaters

Urban sprawl is more prevalent than in other areas because roads, parking lots, and homes are relatively impassable, meaning that water cannot penetrate the forest floor or the wild. Instead, it moves.

Detroit, like many ancient cities, works to divert rainwater in combination with toilets. These compounds are pumped into medicinal plants. During a recent storm, power outages and power outages caused four of the 12 pumps to be replaced by two pumps.

The agency has spent $ 10 million over the past few years by renovating only two pump stations, and another hundreds of millions more. But a complete overhaul of toilets is required to create separate water networks at a cost of more than $ 17 billion.

Cyclone infrastructure in the country is getting older, and many governments have resorted to Band-Aid support instead of solid systems, he said. Mikhail Chester, an architect and dissertation researcher at Arizona State University. And power plants and electronics can sometimes fail in the event of a major storm, Chester adds.

However, even with a well-maintained pump, they would not be able to prevent flooding.

Old colors

Detroit’s pumping stations, similar to most of the rainwater harvesting, were designed to withstand a 10-year hurricane, meaning the amount of rain within an hour with one in 10 chance of occurring each year. A 10-year-old hurricane in the Detroit region would have averaged 1.7 inches of rain in one hour, according to a National Weather Service study.

During the June hurricane, parts of Detroit experienced heavy rainfall of what would have been a 1,000-year-old storm (more than 3.7 inches of rain within an hour), beyond the rest area, according to water officials.

But predicting rainfall is based on history that may not represent major hurricanes, according to Anne Jefferson, a hydrologist at Kent State University. Storms that are said to be one in 10 likely to occur each year are likely to occur more frequently as a result of climate change. And it is said that only a handful of organizations consider climate change in their designs.

Jefferson said: “We are defending ourselves from the past.

Governments that expect to adapt to climate change when planning construction face uncertainty — should they plan for better or worse? It is difficult to know how air affects rain.

Preparing for a hurricane is a good idea, but it is also costly. Larger pumps and pipes are expensive to build and difficult to install, Chester said. And the price hike is not a layer, the extra-pump or double-strength pipe will be twice as expensive.

Fast

Coastal cities are at risk of extreme weather, with some spending significant amounts of money to rehabilitate them. Tampa, Florida, spent $ 27 million repairing pumps and other equipment after floods in 2015 and 2016, according to Tampa Bay Times. Some of these things seem to be working – this year at least, this city has avoided flooding during a hurricane like Hurricane Elsa.

However, rising tides along the shores of Tampa Lake could cover pumping stations. If the sea reaches the point where the water is supposed to flow out of the storm, the system will not be able to drain the city.

Some cities are looking to set up alternatives, such as storm pools and rainforests, to help deal with urban sprawl. Grassy areas such as rainforests can reduce the amount and flow of more water, says Jefferson. If enough of these houses are built in the right places, they can help prevent flooding, he adds, but like other rainwater harvesting devices, they are often not designed to prevent flooding.
