The Cuban Soberana 2 vaccine agency estimates that 62% work with two-thirds of those tested, says BioCubaFarma.

Cuban vaccine spokesman Soberana 2 has shown that 62% work with only two types in three measurements, the biopharmaceutical corporation BioCubaFarma said, citing preliminary results from previous trials.

Cuba, whose biotech sector has been vaccinating for years, has five people tested in the clinical trials, two of whom – Soberana 2 and Abdala – are at the end of the trial.

“In a few weeks we should have a positive outcome with three levels that we hope will succeed,” said Vicente Vérez, director of the state-Finlay Vaccine Institute, which developed Soberana 2.

The news comes on the Caribbean’s largest island since the beginning of the epidemic with the arrival of several species, and new cases of coronavirus infection have been reported.

The Communist Party has decided not to send a foreign vaccine but to rely on itself. Experts say it is dangerous but if it can be profitable, Cuba could burn its scientific record, making significant investments in exporting and promoting vaccines around the world.

“We know that our government has not been able to provide the financial support it needs, but this is a matter of global stability,” President Miguel Diaz-Canel said in a televised address on Saturday.

Several countries from Argentina and Jamaica to Mexico and Venezuela have shown interest in buying Cuban vaccines. Iran began making Soberana 2 earlier this year as part of a series of clinical trials.

Cuban authorities are beginning to offer more experimental vaccines as part of an “intervention study” that is expected to reduce the spread of the virus.

Daily litigation has declined in the capital since the project began, according to the government, although this could be due to extreme constraints.
