Egyptian authorities have released Egyptian and Palestinian activist Ramy Shaath from prison for more than 900 days after forcing him to leave Egypt.

There was no immediate comment from Egyptian authorities on his release.
“If we are happy that the Egyptian authorities heard our call for freedom, we regret that they forced Ramy to leave his Egyptian citizenship as a prerequisite for his release which should be unlimited,” the family said. he said.

Shaath was arrested in Egypt in June 2019 and was held in solitary confinement with other activists for allegedly supporting a “terrorist” group.
The closure came amid a series of political upheavals under Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi that swept away freedom fighters and members of the Muslim Brotherhood who ousted El-Sisi in 2013.
El-Sisi and his followers have said he exists no political prisoners in Egypt, and security measures were needed to stabilize the country after the 2011 riots.
In a statement last month, a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) asked President Emmanuel Macron about Shaath’s future, and a year later the French president said he had brought his case with el-Sisi.
