Bangladesh has reported 11,525 cases of COVID-19, the highest number of cases since the outbreak began, with government officials fearing a lack of medical supplies.

At least 163 people have died in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 15,392, according to a government statement Tuesday. The total number is 966,406.

Bangladesh on Monday closed a nationwide shutdown, locking people out of their homes for another week as the numbers of coronavirus and deaths hit a new high.

Bangladesh’s newly acquired disease epidemic intensified last month as the Delta species – the first of its kind in India – reached the country’s northern and southwestern borders.

The country shares a major border with India, and health experts say the actual death toll is even higher.

Meanwhile, the supply of oxygen to COVID-19 hospitals in Bangladesh is threatened with extinction, as hospitals in the capital Dhaka are on the verge of collapse due to an increase in cases.

Health officials in the country say it will be difficult to address the need for oxygen if the infectious diseases continue to spread.

The country has 1,217 intensive care units (ICU), said Anadolu Agency.

Dhaka alone has 839 ICU beds, which has led to unrest and division between cities. In all, some 356 ICU beds have been available since Tuesday, Anadolu said.

Belal Hossain Rahat, 30, a resident of southwestern Jhenaidah, told the agency that both of his parents had developed severe respiratory and fever due to COVID-19 and are now being treated at their home.

There is no ICU hospital in Jhenaidah government hospital, according to a study by the Directorate General of Health Services.

“The problems at the district hospital have forced us to seek treatment at home. We have already prepared. And if their circumstances do not change, we will move to Dhaka for better treatment, ”said Rahat.

Based on the situation in public hospitals in the state, DGHS spokesman Dr Nazmul Islam told Anadolu Agency that the number of doctors and patients in Bangladesh is 5.26 per 10,000 people.

“So far, there is no major air supply problem but if the numbers continue and people need air then it will be difficult to deal with these problems,” he said.

“We have already been planning a procurement process to save more air in several hospitals.”

DGHS said it has the capacity to provide 210-220 tons of oxygen per day.

But experts and media reports estimate that the daily demand for air exceeds 230 tons among the spread since last week.

The country is facing another vaccination crisis after India stopped exporting AstraZeneca’s shotgun due to its April explosion. Bangladesh has an agreement to obtain 30 million units from the Serum Institute in India.

Only four million Bangladeshis have been vaccinated in a country of 160 million people. Officials hope to launch a new Chinese vaccine with Sinopharm and another vaccine.
