The UK Health Security Agency has agreed with an agreement with the Royal Mail to increase the number of Covid-19 test kits after a massive increase due to Omicron waves disrupting a state-of-the-art internet storage platform for three consecutive days.
About 900,000 PCR home remodeling and testing equipment can be done daily from Saturday, doubling the current amount. About two-thirds of the equipment will have a lateral test.
The UK testing system has struggled to meet the demand for Covid’s rapid testing after the government announced it was changing the rules of isolation for people with double-vaccinated vaccines known to be Omicron’s neighbors. From Tuesday, they can avoid isolation by testing lateral flow instruments (LFDs) daily for seven days.
Earlier this week, UKHSA said a website calling for LFDs was “temporarily suspended to meet existing requirements”, referring to “high demand”. Following the announcement Wednesday night, the test was again available via the page.
Delivery of LFDs to pharmacies will also double, exceeding 10m per week, and PCR testing facilities will increase to 100,000 per day from Thursday, UKHSA said. It also added that it was increasing the number of PCR testing laboratories by testing 150,000 per day.
The commission said that “to ensure that there will be good tests in the coming weeks” it is also buying hundreds of millions of additional tests.
According to health officials, there may be a delay in ordering or collecting exams in the coming weeks due to high demand.
As the UK battles the fast-moving Omicron waves, Covid cases jumped Wednesday to 78,610 in the most recent 24-hour period, the highest daily number recorded for the epidemic. The actual number of infections is at least 200,000 per day, according to the UKHSA, and could rise to 1m a day in weeks to come.
Tim Peto, a professor of medicine at Oxford University who led a state-sponsored course for LFDs, welcomed the rise in employment, predicting that the UK would “rely heavily” on rapid tests as Omicron rides. “The amount of PCR is very difficult,” Peto said. “The mid-term test will be easier to deal with in the Omicron range.”
But Peto and other scientists have said that testing alone would not be enough to break the chain of transmission when faced with the highly infectious Omicron type.
