Facebook revealed its independent mail platform: Story. Mark Zuckerberg announced the project on audio, saying the project is “the answer to environmental issues.”
Bulletin will receive free and paid mix. Some posts will be available for free, while others will be behind the payers, subscribers who get paid get additional features such as dedicated Facebook Groups or special badges.
As of this Letter upstart Substack, Facebook states to pay other writers up front to participate. Zuckerberg also said that Facebook will not cut subscribers’ profits (initially), and will give them access to those who subscribe to other platforms.
Interestingly, unlike previous Facebook experiments, the Bulletin stays mostly outside of the main Facebook app. The mailing platform has its own page and advertising, though it will take advantage of Facebook’s shared resources. These posts are included on the readers’ Facebook pages and readers can access the content section of the Facebook app. Writers will also have “their own writing ability” with podcasts and audio chambers, says Zuckerberg.
The first group of writers includes writers like Malcolm Gladwell and Adam Grant, and they are just watching TV as former CNN White House secretary Jessica Yellin and former ESPN reporter Erin Andrews. So far, it is unknown when Facebook will open the Bulletin for the first of its hand-selected authors. The company describes the program as a “closed beta,” but Zuckerberg said many writers have come “in the next few weeks,” including people familiar with local news. Restart kale reports that the company was keen to avoid the kind of “political” writers who founded Substack.
