Taiwan is showing “great sorrow” in the march which makes it only 14 countries.
Nicaragua on Thursday ended a long-running diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, and changed its stance on Beijing over what it said was an endorsement of the China Communist Party’s One China policy.
The move means Taiwan, an independent island claimed by China, now has stable relations with only 14 countries.
“The government of the Republic of Nicaragua today is violating diplomatic relations with Taiwan and abandoning any communications or alliances,” the foreign ministry said in a statement in Spanish and English.
“The People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government that represents the whole of China and Taiwan is an integral part of China,” it added.
The Foreign Ministry in Taiwan expressed “deep sorrow” at the end of their relationship.
“The long-standing relationship and mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries has been neglected by the Ortega government,” the ministry said on Twitter. “Taiwan is still on its knees and will continue to do good in the world.”
Most of the remaining allies in Taiwan are in Latin America and the Pacific. Beijing has made efforts to dedicate Taiwan to the rest of the world, with the exception of major international organizations, such as the World Health Organization, which has been working hard since Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen was first elected in 2016.
The Nicaraguan move follows the re-election of President Daniel Ortega following a controversial election that was criticized as “shameful “ and opposition and opposition from the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom.
The growing ties between the democratic regime and Beijing, however, have seen excellent relations with the island in recent years. Delegates from other countries, including the Czech Republic and the European Parliament, have visited, despite angry protests from Beijing.
Last month, Taiwan opened a Lithuanian embassy, using his name and not Taipei. China called it a “major move” and later reduced relations with the Baltic state.
