Niger: A shooting at Seini Oumarou’s house kills security guards | Niger Stories

Two men riding a motorcycle at the home of Seini Oumarou, president of the National Assembly in Niger.

A gunshot wound at the home of Seini Oumarou, President of the National Assembly in Niger, has killed one of his bodyguards and injured a second, officials said.

The attack, which lasted Friday through Saturday night, was carried out by two men on a motorcycle, Osseini Salatou, an Oumarou adviser, told reporters on Saturday.

“He shot at the guards (placed in front of his house) and killed one of them,” said another.

The Niger Interior Ministry confirmed the protest in a statement on Saturday evening, adding that the attackers had tried to drive a 4 × 4 car parked in front of the building before leaving.

Officials opened an investigation into the protest, he added.

Oumarou leads the National Movement for the Development Society, which was strong between 1999 and 2010.

Oumarou, now 70, was third at the first conference in December 2020, before being thrown behind the winner, Mohamed Bazoum.

In the aftermath of the Bazoum election in February, protesters stormed Oumarou’s home, killing one of his bodyguards.

Niger is located on the edge of the Sahara Desert, where security is tight after ISIL and al-Qaeda militants joined forces from Nigeria, Mali and Libya.
