Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for a reduction in borders “essential to our return journey”

Australia will allow foreign visas holders to enter the country from early December, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday, as they take steps to resume international travel and boost the economy.

Australia closed its international borders in May 2020 and allowed only a handful of people and permanent residents to enter to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

The rules were revised in recent weeks to allow foreign brothers to enter, and Morrison said this would be extended from December 1 to allow vaccinated students, business visas and refugees to arrive.

“The return of skilled workers and students to Australia is a key factor in our return journey,” Morrison told reporters at Canberra headquarters.

Australia will also allow vaccinated tourists from South Korea and Japan from December 1, he said.

The return of international students, worth about $ 35 billion a year to the Australian economy, will be a major boost to the education sector.

Many Australian universities have relied on international students and the closure of the borders has resulted in many higher education institutions retiring hundreds of employees.

A group of international students arrived in Australia from Singapore on Sunday after a boom in travel between the two countries began.

Border laws, immediate closure and strict social laws have helped Australia to keep its coronavirus numbers at a lower level than most other countries, with nearly 200,000 cases and 1,948 deaths.

Many new cases are reported in Victoria state, where 1,029 cases were reported on Monday. New South Wales, home to Sydney, also reported 180 cases. Some countries and territories do not have COVID or have very few cases.
